FORMATION OF STANDING WAVE IN ROLLING TIRES: RADIAL PASSENGER TIRES

Radial passenger tires of different makes were subjected to high speed rolling under load on a testing wheel to determine the critical speed at which the standing wave starts to form. The tires of different makes exhibited significantly different levels of the critical speed. The damping coefficient and mass density of the tire wall of the tires tested were measured and, using the circular membrane model, the correlation between these properties and the observed critical speed of standing wave formation was sought. As expected from the model, a higher critical speed, which is desirable for a standing-wave-free tire, calls for a higher damping coefficient and a lower mass density of the tire wall. The damping coefficient, in particular, plays an important role and it should not be neglected in the analyses. In the comparison of the tire walls reinforced with steel cord and polymeric cord, the former generally exhibits a higher damping coefficient than the latter, contrary to the common expectation. Although the single steel filaments are elastic, the inter-filament friction in the steel cord provides more damping effect than the polymeric cord. Steel-reinforced tire wall also has a higher mass density. The damping coefficient is directly related to the mechanical loss in cyclic deformation and, hence, to the rolling resistance of a tire. Thus, the study shows that, in principle, it is more difficult to design a standing-wave-free and fuel-efficient tire with steel cord than it is with polymeric cord.
