Evaluating the inter-dependence between network robustness and trade criticality with an application to the Province of Ontario, Canada
This research will employ a methodology that incorporates network travel time effects through the use of the Network Robustness Index (NRI), trade criticality with respect to the value of shipped goods corresponding to the shippers’ industry classification, and the characteristics of the network itself in order to quantify network robustness and identify critical links. A shippers’ survey that includes the origin, destination, industry classification, goods classification, and other shipment characteristics for shipments throughout the province of Ontario, Canada, as well as the Commercial Vehicle Survey (CVS) from the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO) and a GPS dataset of origin-destination trucking flows will be used in the analysis. The results will quantify the impacts of network rerouting due to the removal of network links and the associated costs for delivering goods due to delays, to identify the most susceptible and critical links in the Ontario network.
