ANNUAL BULLETIN OF TRANSPORT STATISTICS FOR EUROPE 1982
The purpose of the Annual Bulletin of Transport Statistics for Europe is to provide basic data on transport and related trends in European countries, Canada and the United States of America. The publication is purely statistical in character. The scope of the statistics comprises the rail, road and inland waterway sectors, container transport, goods loaded and unloaded at sea ports, transport by oil pipeline and international goods transport by various modes of transport andd commodity group. The data refer to length of networks, number, capacity and power of vehicles and internal and international traffic and transport. In the road sector, data are also given on expenditure on roads. General information on the consumption of energy in transport is given in table 5. The Group of Experts on Transport Statistics, at its thirty-third session in September 1981, approved the enlargement of table 2, which, as from the 1980 edition of the Bulletin, contains information on value added in industry and the transport and communication sector and their relative importance in the national economy, as well as data related to gross fixed capital formation in the transport and communication sector and its relative importance in total gross fixed capital formation. Following other decisions of the Group of Experts on Transport Statistics, taken at the same session, and implemented as from the 1981 edition of the Bulletin, the classification of railway wagons in table 7 was amended to conform with the one adopted by the International Union of Railways in 1978. In table 13, trolleybuses are henceforth included under motor coaches and buses. Table 25 was enlarged to include information about goods loaded and unloaded at sea ports in national sea transport. Table 26 also was enlarged and now gives separate data for large, medium, and small containers as well as for empty containers. The statistics appearing in this Bulletin are compiled by the secretariat of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe from replies to questionnaires supplied by various countries, or from official national and international sources mentioned in Annex II.
