SCHOOL BUS SAFETY IN NEW YORK STATE -- CHILDREN AT RISK?
School bus safety has made significant progress in recent years as safety advocates have focused attention on areas that needed improvement. New York State has been a leader in the field, going beyond federal standards in many areas. School buses have become one of the safest forms of transportation available, however, "although the number of fatalities and injuries is relatively small...we must decide if relative safety is enough." In this report, the Legislative Commission on Critical Transportation Choices (LCCTC) reviews the topic of school bus safety, and offers recommendations designed to further decrease the number of accidents, injuries and death, which if implemented will allow New York State to maintain its position as the nation's leader in providing consistently safe bus transportation for its schoolchildren.
