PRODUCTS LIABILITY--BRINGING THE INTERACTION OF SOCIETY AND TECHNOLOGY INTO ENGINEERING EDUCATION

The role of engineering education in the interaction between technology and society is reviewed, with particular emphasis on design engineering and the law. The Products Liability crisis has an impact on engineering education through the teaching of design courses and, increasingly, through faculty consulting work. The broadening perspective in engineering education is considered from the standpoint of traditional engineering education, design engineering education, and guidelines for professional practice. Curriculum topics are recommended concerning engineering and the law, engineering and government, and professional practice. The present status of Products Liability in engineering education is surveyed. At least 160 university departments of engineering teach Products Liability concepts. Continuing education programs in this field have been provided through universities, professional societies, engineering journals, insurance seminars, the Defense Research Institute, and other private short courses.
