THE FLUXLESS BRAZING OF ALUMINUM RADIATORS

The history of material, processing, and development experience with vacuum brazing of aluminum radiators is reviewed. Three systems of fluxless brazing are currently producing parts such as air conditioner evaporators, transmission oil coolers, and radiators for production and prototype development. The welded, clad tube and bare fin concept is economically and technically superior to other designs. The mechanisms of vacuum brazing and process requirements are reviewed as they apply to radiators. Individual components and joint areas are examined, including tube-fin joints, tube-header joints, tank-header joints, and fittings.
