PRACTICAL ASPECTS OF AIR BRAKE REGULATIONS IN EUROPE

European Economic Community (EEC) brake regulations are reflective of many different national inputs over a number of years and cover all types of vehicles. Since British and German manufacturing techniques were quite different in philosophy, there have been some interesting contrasts in the valves and system principles employed to meet the uniform requirements. These are described in the following areas: dual braking systems; system protection in case of failure; upright and inverse control systems; trailer controls; hand control valves; spring brakes and lock actuators; brake distribution and compatibility; and trailer systems. Interpretation of the EEC Directives and establishment of uniform test methods have given rise to several problems. Consequently, a period of stability is sought before further changes are introduced.
