ROAD ACCIDENT COSTS IN SOUTH AFRICA IN 1980- DEVELOPMENT OF VEHICLE DAMAGE COSTS
This study reviews the scope of previous work on the valuation of accident costs with the aim of extending the coverage and measurement of road accident costs in South Africa. The results were based on countrywide data relating to over 9700 insurance vehicle damage claims investigated, involving accidents in fifty statistical regions of South Africa in 1980. Given the number and type of vehicles involved, accident costs are derived using the vehicle damage cost per involvement and adding the other cost components presented in a previous report. Also, the difference in cost of damage to vehicle, for urban and rural area, region of the country, and age of driver and age of his/her driving license are presented and analysed. (TRRL)
