TCRP Synthesis 156: How Do Transit Agencies Use Social Media?
This article presents highlights from the 2022 Transit Cooperative Research Program (TCRP) Synthesis 156: Uses of Social Media in Public Transportation. The work included a literature review, a survey of 46 transit agencies, and case examples from six U.S. agencies and one Canadian agency. Topics include: frequency of social media platform use, type of information shared on social media, employee policy related to social media interaction, and social media use during COVID-19. Twitter and Facebook were the platforms that agencies used most frequently to share information and provide customer support. Service alerts were the predominant type of information shared frequently by agencies. The agencies emphasized the importance of employing a designated social media manager and spokesperson to communicate via social media effectively and efficiently.
