REDUCTION OF REFLECTIVE CRACKING BY USE OF IMPERVIOUS MEMBRANE
The project involved in this study was located on U. S. 12 beginning one-half mile south of the Grand River southeasterly to the Junction of S. D. 20, in Corson County. The project length was 7.594 miles. The primary objective of this study was to determine if any method could be devised that would prevent large amounts of water from entering the subgrade through the wide cracks, a condition which allows a reservior of water to build up during the spring and summer, resulting in frost heaves adjacent to the large cracks during the winter. Consideration was given to three remedial methods which were thought to have some merit in reducing the amount of free water that infiltrates the subgrade. These methods were as follows: (1) cutting a trench adjacent to the shoulder line; (2) sealing with a strip of Petro-Mat over a previously asphalt tacked surface and covering the mat with a thin seal of asphalt and sand or chip; and (3) sealing with Protecto-Wrap. Due to the construction costs involved in the first method, only the final two methods were used. This report presents the conclusions and recommendations drawn from the study.
