THE IMPACT OF TECHNOLOGICAL CHANGE IN TRANSPORTATION NETWORKS ON REGIONAL PRODUCTIVITY AND DEVELOPMENT
This research investigation addressed the impact issue with respect to a regional rail network and to a regional highway system. The test area was a predominantly urban growth region and only those technological changes put into operation during the last 25 to 30 years were considered. The test area selected was the Houston-Beaumont region of Texas consisting of well defined Standard Metropolitan Statistical Areas. The findings of the research project confirmed the fact that technological changes in transportation systems as such have very little measurable impact on the economy of a given region. The general elasticity of transportation systems economics in their relationship to regional macroeconomic conditions was confirmed. The models and the data base developed through this project will be useful in connection with other metropolitan transportation planning studies because they allow for pertinent comparison. The methodology and techniques developed are readily transferable to comparable situations elsewhere.
