CYCLE FACILITIES IN TOWNS - THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORT'S EXPERIENCE

The paper describes a number of the measures included in the Department of Transport's programme of innovatory cycle schemes and also discusses the monitoring results that may have a bearing on the planning and design of future schemes. It is considered that the programme has made a significant contribution to a knowledge of the provision of facilities for cyclists in towns. In addition to the particular lessons learnt, the following general conclusions are applicable to the provision of all special cycle facilities: (1) a good knowledge of cyclists requirements is essential in the planning of cycle schemes; (2) the object of such schemes must be to satisfy a need such as to avoid a known danger; (3) special attention must be paid to the detailed design of cycle facilities to attract maximum use; and (4) the design of cycle facilities must encourage their correct use in order to minimise inconvenience and conflict between different users.
