DECREASING THE PLASTIC DEFORMATION OF MASTIC ASPHALT
VALUASFALTTIEN PLASTISEN DEFORMAATION VAHENTAMINEN
Alternative means of decreasing the deformation of mastic asphalt with the aid of proportioning and binder have been studied. The binder used was harder than normal bitumen and also modified bitumens. The investigation was made as test track drive on Neste Oy's vertical track using temperatures of 20, 30, 40 and 45 deg C. The results show that the deformation sensitivity of mastic asphalt can most effectively be decreased by using as binder a bitumen modified with synthetic rubber. Other means considered are decrease of binder content and use of harder bitumen. The rheological properties of the binder acting in mastic asphalt pavement explain the deformation of the pavement.
