USABILITY OF SPLITTING TENSILE STRENGTH TEST IN THE STRENGTH TESTS OF ASPHALT CONCRETE SPECIMENS

HALKAISUVETOLUJUUSKOKEEN KAYTTOKELPOISUUS ASFALTTIBETONIKOEKAPPALEIDEN LUJUUSKOESTUKSESSA

The Finland Marshall-test has traditionally been used i strength tests and proportioning of asphalt pavement. The results of the method have been found to have a relatively poor correlation with the strength of the asphalt pavement on the road. A preliminary study was made on how applicable the splitting tensile strength test is as a test method for asphalt concrete and whether the test can be made with the Marshall compression apparatus generally used in the field. The splitting tensile strength test is on the basis of the research results applicable to testing of asphalt concrete specimens with regard to its accuracy and deviation. A modified Marshall compression apparatus can be used in determination of tensile strength. (TRRL)
