ROAD MEDIANS

The publication is designed to assist in the planning and design of medians for new arterial roads, or when upgrading existing roads. Although not intended to be used as a manual of current practice the work outlines the essential features and functions of medians, gives ranges of parameters for median location and design, and also indicates the main criteria by which the need for medians can be assessed. The wide range of roads and conditions under which medians are used precludes the specification of rigid parameters but the values given should be used recognising the importance of local conditions, policies and practices. The design and layout of medians are discussed in the following sections: assessment criteria; cross sectional elements; median openings; surface treatment and landscaping; drainage; and, median barriers.
