DOWNTOWN TRANSIT MALL FEASIBILITY STUDY FOR THE CITY OF YONKERS, NEW YORK

The 1970 plans for a pedestrian mall in Getty Square that would link the planned development in Getty Square with the Hudson River waterfront and proposed waterfront development generated this study. Planners have viewed the Getty Square Mall as the focal point for revitalizing the central business district (CBD) and energizing its economy. The purpose of this study is to analyze the transportation impact of a transit mall in the Getty Square section of Yonkers, New York. The analysis includes the impacts on economic development, urban environment, and land use patterns. Surveys were conducted of the land use and retail conditions; of pedestrians and merchants; of bus transit and passenger volumes; of predestrian and vehicle volumes; as well as of parking conditions. Five transit mall designs were analyzed and evaluated. Included in the evaluation were construction, maintenance, and operation costs, and revenues from increased sales and property values. The report concludes with an implementation strategy for Getty Square transit mall directed largely at public support for revitalizing the area.
