Description of the development of the Dutch railway network from 1840 and 1940 and the economic and social environment in which it occurred. This thesis examines the macro- and micro-economic development prospects offered by the railways. It looks at national, regional and local services. The relationship between railway line construction and regional development, especially in connection with port development and urbanization is also examined.
