LIQUID FUELS, TRANSPORT AND URBAN STRUCTURE: A SOCIAL SCIENCE RESEARCH REVIEW

A project of the Academies of the Social Sciences in Australia and the Australian Academy of the Humanities with the support of the National Energy Research, Development and Demonstration Council. The aim of the project is to study the challenge of social adjustment posed by the changing liquid fuels situation in Australia. This review will adopt a multi-disciplinary perspective on the emerging social science research base and will link the immediate transport energy dimension with the wider socio-economic and political contexts. This perspective will then be utilised to review the existing information base and to suggest priority directions for further research. The specific terms of reference of the review are the social and economic impacts of changes in liquid fuels prices and availability with respect to transport and spatial structures in, and the planning of, major cities in Australia. The fundamental questions addressed by this study are: (a) what information do we need in order to assess both the contribution of the changing liquid fuels situation to the conservation of oil derived transport fuels, and the distributional effects on different categories of transport users of changes in liquid fuels prices and availability?; (b) how much of this information do we already have?; and (c) what further research remains to be conducted?
