RAIL SURVEY 1981

The organisation of the survey is described. Topics covered included: journey purpose, destination, destination purpose by time, journey frequencies, mode of travel to station, rail choice factors by car availability. Comparisons with the previous (1975) survey are made. Newport retains its dominant position and is the only inter-city station in the county. Abergavenny also has a varied pattern of use, but the remaining stations are used mainly by commuters in the local area. The most important change since 1975 has been the reduction in work trips, offset for the commuter based stations by growth in social, recreational and shopping trips. Newport has had an 8 per cent reduction in journeys. There is a general decline in the use of buses and an increase in the use of cars for travelling to and from the station although there is a decrease in the number of travellers bringing their own car and parking at the station.
