COMPUTER PREDICTION OF DEGREE OF INJURY RECEIVED BY A FORWARD POSITIONED CHILD DUE TO AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT FORCES

This report comments on a report by Honda Motor Company given at the 8th International Conference on Experimental Safety Vehicles held at Wolfsburg, Germany on October 21-24, 1980. The paper is entitled, "Injuries to Children from Airbag Deployment", by H. Takeda and S. Kobayashi. Since the potential for child injury due to airbag deployment forces has been a subject of investigation by NHTSA for several years, this paper was of special interest to NHTSA. In this report the purpose is to comment on the Honda results and to use a recently developed computer program called "PAC" to analytically expand on the Honda paper and draw some further conclusions based upon analysis. A specific conclusion of this study is that the Honda results are especially severe due to the type of inflator used and that equivalent protection for normally seated adults can be obtained with less aggressive inflators to the small child.
