URBANIZATION AND TRAFFIC INFRASTRUCTURE IN THE "RANDSTAD"
VERSTEDELIJKING EN VERKEERSINFRASTRUCTUUR IN DE RANDSTAD
The interaction between physical planning and traffic and transport is the main theme of the report. The interaction is described from the point if view of the influence of the different layouts of traffic networks on environmental development and on traffic and transport. The ideas and thoughts, which were developed, are illustrated by application to a city and by application to the Randstad, which is the conglomeration of the five big cities in the western part of the Netherlands. In the past houses were built for the growing population and to satisfy the wish to have more space for living. The growth of the population is now decreasing and new residential areas are now built for more living space. More than in the past it is necessary to design such residential areas along existing public transport lines if public transport is to remain viable. Each new location which makes a new public transport line necessary decreases in principle the passenger demand on all other lines. This leads to higher costs and lower quality. (TRRL)
