CONCRETE VERSUS ASPHALT - SOME IMPRESSIONS
The structural behaviour of different pavement types is briefly sketched. A comparison is made of concrete, asphalt and steel as engineering materials potentially suitable for idealised pavement structures. The cost effectiveness of these materials is considered on the basis of flexural load capacity only. The implications of joints and cracks in concrete pavements are discussed with reference to pavement design and construction techniques. Some aspects of pavement life are viewed from the design angle. Finally, priorities are considered for the use of concrete and asphalt in various pavement applications. (Author/TRRL)
