SHALLOW FULL DEPTH ASPHALT TEST TRACK AT ARRB
This paper describes the design, construction and short-term performance of trial sections of full-scale shallow full depth asphalt pavements installed at the end of 1982 at the Australian Road Research Centre in Melbourne. Asphalt pavement sections 120, 100 and 80 mm thick were constructed directly over a clay subgrade having a low soaked CBR. The pavement was wide enough to allow for two lanes of trafficking: a "heavy" lane and a "light" lane, with the "light" lane receiving approaximately 10 percent of the traffic applied to the "heavy" lane. Performance in the "heavy" lane after about 3000 esas over 18 months has been satisfactory, with the least rutting occuring in the 80 mm section. This section has the highest unsoaked CBR and to date the in situ moisture content/optimum moisture content ratio is lowest in this section. Rutting in the outer wheel path is higher in the "light" lane because of the presence of a longitudinal crack which resulted from the boxing out and associated crushed rock backfill required for the construction of the concrete kerb and channel. The subgrade moisture content rose after construction but this has not been accompanied by any significant drop in CBR. Deflection data were also examined and guidelines for future deflection testing are indicated. (Author/TRRL)
