THE ROLE OF ROAD AND TRAFFIC AUTHORITIES IN ACCIDENT STATISTICS. ROAD ACCIDENT INFORMATION SEMINAR PROCEEDINGS
Accident data are gathered from the surviving drivers and from the police officers who make the accident reports. Types of data derived include raw, demographic, and broad accident classifications. Such data are used to make spot maps and accident rate lists. In addition to accident data from a central data bank, each state road authority uses its own data on selected accidents so that road hazards may be corrected immediately. In-depth studies of particular accidents, as conducted by a specialized investigation team, help show causative factors. The bulk of the accident investigation by state road authorities concerns accident rates before and after road improvements.
