ROAD ACCIDENT INFORMATION SEMINAR PROCEEDINGS, CANBERRA, 26-28 MARCH 1974 (AUSTRALIA)
Opening and keynote addresses deal with rationalizing transport policy in Australia and defining requirements of a mass accident data system, respectively. In a session on compilation and presentation of data, the role of the Australian Bureau of Statistics and of road and accident authorities in accident statistics were discussed, as well as uniform data collection. A session on sources of accident data considered police accident reporting, population characteristics and measures of exposure to road accidents, and multidisciplinary mass data collection. Mass data workshops dealt with police data collections, uniform accident data, and data processing systems. A session on the use of accident data considered public use of statistics, evaluation of countermeasures, and the trilevel approach to crash investigation. A paper concerning development of an accident data system considered the information system in North Carolina. Accident information workshops dealt with human, vehicle, road and environmental, and medical factors. In-depth investigations in Australia included one in metropolitan Adelaide, a mobile survey in Victoria, an investigation of seat belt performance in New South Wales crashes, rural accidents within 100 mi. of Brisbane, and the role of wreckage examination in the investigation of aircraft accidents. The concluding session deals with the National Authority on Road Safety and Standards. Included are lists of authors and seminar delegates, with their professional affiliations.
