Technical support to assess the upgrades necessary to the advanced driver distraction warning systems
For prevention of crashes caused by driver distraction, the European Parliament and Council have called for the regulation of Advanced Driver Distraction Warning (ADDW) systems. ADDWs are designed to help drivers’ alertness and warn them if they become distracted. This report describes the current technology, supports the implementation of performance requirements for ADDWs and human machine interaction (HMI) systems, and proposes ADDW test procedures. Three tasks were performed to develop draft regulations for ADDWs: 1) A literature review; 2) Engagement of ADDW stakeholders; 3) Definition of test methods. Draft requirements for ADDW testing, HMI and system functions were established. These requirements will ensure that ADDWs meet minimum quality standards while allowing design freedom to manufacturers. A draft of the proposed regulatory text is included in Appendix B.
