SEISMIC DESIGN OF HIGHWAY BRIDGES

This paper outlines (1) parts of the new specification "Seismic Design Guidelines for Highway Bridges, ATC-6", for straight highway bridges. The analysis techniques (single-mode spectral method and multi-mode spectral method) are described together with their application; (2) a proposed design guide for curved steel box girder bridges, which incorporates the interaction between bending and torsional forces. The study of the induced actions on a structure, when subjected to earthquake, was confined to utilization of a space frame matrix simulation. The basic modeling consists of a series of typical elements attached rigidly together to form a continuous curved box girder bridge. For the covering abstract see TRRL 393158. (TRRL)
