REQUIREMENTS FOR ON BOARD FAILURE DETECTION SYSTEMS FOR RAIL VEHICLES
On board failure detection systems for rail vehicles are proposed as a means of reducing train accidents, particularly at high speeds. In this paper accidents are divided in broad categories of cause and speed range. Special emphasis is given to equipment caused accidents as a percentage of total accidents for all speeds, and then for three speed ranges: 10mph and below; 11-30mph; and 31mph and above. At 31mph and above, there is a larger proportion of equipment caused accidents than when the analysis includes the lower speeds. Isolating component failure accidents, a similar trend is noted; with certain components causing a very small percentage of accidents at lower speeds, but a greater percentage at higher speeds. These components are discussed in terms of past research with on board sensors as well as possible devices for future research and development. (TRRL)
