The investigation on the effects of sulphur on the performance of sulphur-bitumen binder

In sulphur–bitumen binder (SBB), sulphur enhanced rheological properties with low sulphur content and acting as filler with high sulphur content. The paper presents results of penetration, softening temperatures, rheological characteristics of SBB at different curing days at room temperature with different sulphur/bitumen ratios of 10/90; 20/80; 30/70; 40/60. Additionally, the rotational viscosity testing on SBB at three temperatures 120°C, 135°C, 150°C was conducted to determine the mixing and compaction temperatures of asphalt concrete using SBB. Results showed that the asphalt concrete containing SBB could be mixed and compacted at 15–20°C lower temperatures than conventional asphalt concrete. Furthermore, the crystallisation of sulphur in SBB has a positive effect on the properties of SBB, which could improve the ability of SBB to resist the rutting of pavement at high temperatures. Sulphur increased the softening temperature, complex shear modulus, and G*/sinδ of SBB at 7,14 and 30 days of curing.
