THE IMPACT OF COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY ON THE WORKING ENVIRONMENT OF PLANNERS

Microcomputers make headlines in the professional press. Forecasts of tremendous and irreversible impacts on the day to day activities and the working environment of planners abound. These prognoses are nourished by the astounding pace of technological development. Still microcomputers have - as a recent survey revealed - only superficially penetrated the Dutch planning offices. These expectations on how the "mighty-micro" will affect the working environment of planners are widely accepted although only scattered experience with actual applications has been obtained. There is hence a need to explore the implications of things to come. The paper describes among others the design of an experiment with the application of this new technology in the field of generating and selecting suitable corridors for linear facilities such as highways etc. The project uses an ICL PERQ Workstation linked to the computer network of the University of Nijmegen Computational Center.
