THE PLANNING OF MOTORWAY ALIGNMENTS THROUGH COMPUTER-AIDED DESIGN

This paper is devoted to an application of the multicriteria approach to the design of a new motorway alignment. Some recent developments in the field of qualitative multicriteria analysis is treated in relation to the problem of systematic location. The paper has the following structure: in section two the general principle of the model is outlined. Section three is devoted to an elaboration of some important components, viz the use of the curve radius, the treatment of "peak" values and the treatment of qualitative criterion weights. The model is illustrated in section four by means of an empirical application to a motorway location in the Dutch province of Limburg. For the covering abstract of the conference see TRIS 389247.
