Lateral Acceleration Patterns on Interchange Ramps
In this research it is desired to draw conclusions about the variation and the change of lateral acceleration as a function of speed and interchange ramp radius. Hence, it will be possible to accurately and reliably define new limit values of comfort, tolerance and safety depending on interchange ramp radius in order to define new driving behavior characteristics. In the process, the geometry of the existing roads and ramps is taken into account, using high accuracy equipment. Also a sufficient number of measurements has been made in respect to the lateral acceleration values felt by a large number of individual drivers, of variable age groups and variable vehicle types and ages. All measurements have been carried out outside urban areas and in free flow conditions. Also in the context of this research, threshold values of lateral acceleration have been used, derived from international literature and guidelines models, which may not concern ramps but have a more general application. Based on the measured values of lateral acceleration, a comparison was made with the limit values written in the literature in order to extract the percentages of drivers exceeding these limit values. Generally, the results showed that lateral acceleration increases more abruptly in smaller radius ramps, within which the limit values are significantly surpassed, compared to the larger radius ramps. Finally, it concluded that the key factor defines the limit type and the driving behavior, based on the lateral acceleration, is the ramp radius.
