INCORPORATING ATTRIBUTE THRESHOLDS INTO MODE CHOICE MODELS

The concept of thresholds has been mentioned in the transport choice literature from time to time. Few studies of mode choice have however attempted to incorporate them into a modelling context. In this paper the concept of minimally perceived attribute differences is introduced into mode choice models. For estimating the parameters of the model maximum likelihood is employed and an experimental test is carried out on a sample of people making trips to Melbourne CBD. It was found that the "average" respondent required a 12 minute (22 per cent) difference in travel time or a 12 cent (32 per cent) difference in travel cost before he would react to the variation in attribute ratings. The model is compared with a more traditional logit model with a linear additive measure of utility. The number of the covering abstract for the conference is IRRD no. 277326. (Author/TRRL)
