WEST MIDLANDS TRAC LINE 65. WEST MIDLANDS GUIDED BUSWAY

A description is given of some of the features of the guided busway route that the West Midlands PTE propose to introduce this year. The busway will be situated in the central reservation of a dual carriageway and will be 600 m long. The busway will comprise a double track with steel rails set into concrete. The edges of the track will be landscaped, with sloping edges to deter pedestrians from straying onto the track. The centre of the track, between the bus wheels, will be rough surfaced to prevent possible abuse by car drivers. Along the length of the track will be six pedestrian crossings and six passenger stations which will have raised platforms eliminating the need to step up onto the bus. They will have ramps for pushchairs or wheelchairs and electronic information displays. The only modifications to the buses for guided operation are the addition of horizontal rubber guide wheels attached to the steering arms on either side of the bus. Details of their accommodation are given. The busway has the advantage of giving the bus a completely traffic-free environment, which should lead to improved reliability. (TRRL)
