TRANSPORTATION ENERGY CONSERVATION MEASURES IMPLEMENTED BY THE MUNICIPALITY OF METROPOLITAN TORONTO IN 1983
The energy consumption profile for Metropolitan Toronto developed through the computer-based analysis mentioned above indicated that approximately 62.5% of the total transportation energy in Metropolitan Toronto is expended on the arterial and collector road system. Freeways account for 26.7% of the total, local roads for 7.3%, and public transit 3.5%. Stops and delays at traffic signals on the arterial/collector road system account for 31.9% of all direct transportation energy consumed annually in Metropolitan Toronto. Based on the criteria used in reviewing the many possible measures which could be implemented in Metropolitan Toronto, the measures which offered the most significant energy conservation potential were: 1. optimization of traffic signal timing; 2. conversion to and enhancement of semi-actuated traffic signals; and 3. variable traffic signal timing throughout the day.
