A DETAILED STUDY OF POWER AND LOAD RELATED BOATING ACCIDENT DATA

The report describes an investigation of recreational boating accidents relating to power and load. The reports of Coast Guard accident files were studied to determine the events preceeding the accidents and to relate some aspect of power and/or loading. 379 cases were studied, these consisted of open motorboats up to 20' in length having fatal accidents during 1971 and 1972. Three typical accident categories were examined--speed related, load related, and collisions. The most common pre-accident descriptors called 'casualty initiators' are discussed so that basic problem areas can be defined and remedy sources identified. Brief reviews of four major problem areas are discussed which involve the general instability problem associated with small, lightweight 'John Boat' types.
