THE IMPORTANCE OF THE BICYCLE IN LOCAL PUBLIC PASSENGER TRANSPORT FACTS AND EXPERIENCE FROM SELECTED COUNTRIES
The UITP International Commission on Traffic and Urban Planning initiated this study of different nations' attempts to coordinate the bicycle and public transit, assessing the results from the standpoints of the passengers and transit operating agencies. West Germany has 650 bicycles per 1000 inhabitants and 12 percent of daily trips do involve bicycles. Japan, Switzerland and the U.S. have about 400 bicycles per 1000. Three possibilities for increasing the role of bicycles were studied: (1) Bicycle rentals at railroad and bus station; (2) Carrying of bicycles on trains and buses; (3) "Bike and Ride" in which transit passengers use their bicycles for access to transit stops. Experiences with one or all these techniques are described in West Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark, Great Britain, Netherlands, Switzerland, Japan and U.S. It is concluded that bicycle rental will be of interest only at stations near recreational areas, that carrying of accompanied bicycles will be restricted to rapid transit in off-peak periods; and that the Bike and Ride has the greatest potential in coordinated transport. Bicycle parking facilities are important.
