PATH CAR PACT BREAKS NEW GROUND

Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, parent of Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH) transit line which connects New Jersey with New York City, has awarded a $285 million contract for 96 new stainless-steel transit cars and for staged rehabilitation of 248 existing aluminum-body cars to a Japanese firm and its American subsidiary. Work will be substantially performed within the Port District at a plant just north of New York City. The goal was to combine new car procurement with economic development in the New York metropolitan region. While this PATH funding comes from the PA (and not UMTA), PA intended to have an essentially U.S. produced new car. The current $600 million PATH modernization program includes also new tunnel ventilation, emergency evacuation shafts and a new car running repair facility.
