TRANSMIS--II: THE PEOPLE SYSTEM--PLANNING, SCHEDULING, TRANSPORTATION, PAYROLL AND PERSONNEL

TRANSMIS II, being installed at Southern California Rapid Transit District by Arthur Andersen & Co., supplements TRANSMIS-I's assurance of available vehicles by assuring that there are operators for them. The Planning Department uses the system to develop service needs in the Los Angeles region and schedulers then use subsystmes for trip scheduling, runcutting (allocating bus drivers), and rostering (creating weekly crews and allocating days off). Manual calculations are eliminated. Driver bids and assignments are handled through bidding and dispatching subsystems to the Transit Operator Timeroll System (TOTS). That system calculates gross and net pay, makes labor distributions, and generates government-required reports. An on-line, real-time system can automatically calculate times for both scheduled and exception activities. Between 1983 and 1987 TRANSMIS-II is estimated to save $30 million by reducing operating costs and clerical effort, and by increased productivity.
