SUBWAY SOLUTION OFFERS SEATTLE "INSTANT RELIEF" AND FUTURE FLEXIBILITY

Seattle's Metro Transit has planned a 1.3-mile twin-tube subway to relieve downtown traffic congestion by putting bus movement below ground. Dual-mode articulated trolley buses will traverse this subway, propelled by diesel engines on the streets and freeways and by electric traction motors in the subway. UMTA has given the $455 million plan its highest rating. Construction is scheduled to start in 1986 and operation in 1990. The Washington State Department of Transportation has been building high-occupancy vehicle lanes on interstate highway rights of way and by 1990 there will be about 60 miles of reserved highway lanes in the Seattle area. Over 20 park and ride lots have been built by Metro and the state DOT. Metro Transit has been handling growing ridership and this trend is expected to continue as the congested central business district expands. The development of the dual-mode bus is discussed.
