SPECIAL FASTENERS, REHAB METHODS FOR TRANSIT BRIDGE TRACK
The concrete ballast decks for the double-track Lindenwold Line across the Ben Franklin Bridge between Philadelphia and Camden, N.J., were found seriously deteriorated when inspected in 1980. The rapid transit tracks of Port Authority Transit Corp. (PATCO) share the suspension span with a major roadway between the two cities. PATCO elected to replace the ballast decks, used only on the approach spans, with an open-deck construction and at the same time to extend continuously welded rail (CWR) across the open-deck suspension span segment. CWR required a new rail fastening system and installation of 10 expansion joints which permit the rail to expand and contract independently of the bridge. Wooden cross ties with Pandrol tie plates and fasteners were used to assemble the track panels which subsequently had their rails feild welded into continuous strings. The bridge structure, which showed little corrosion, was cleaned and painted.
