ROAD DATA - WHERE IS IT?

There are really two questions posed in the title, namely: "where are the data items geographically located?" and "where are the data records located?" Road-related data management in the past has been quite fragmented with the various groups often maintaining their own data records for their own needs on their own reference system. Modern information management requires a comprehensive and co-ordinated approach to permit integration or correlation of the various data classes. The Department of Main Roads, NSW, is examining the existing methods of recording road-related data in its organisation, and the relationships amongst those records, with the view to improving corporate information management. As definition of geographic position of data is essential it is also developing a common locational reference system by which all relevant road information will be referenced. This paper describes the results of the investigation, suggests methods for improved road information management, and describes the system under development for referencing the data. (Author/TRRL)
