IMPLEMENTATION OF LOCAL AREA TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT AND STREETSCAPE IMPROVEMENT SCHEME IN SHIRE OF CORIO PROCEEDINGS 12TH ARRB CONF.,HOBART, TASMANNIA, 27-31 AUGUST 1984
This paper reports on an innovative scheme involving the placement of spot treatments within a local traffic area. The aims of the scheme are to reduce traffic speeds and through traffic volumes and to provide a much safer and more pleasant living environment. The treatments placed are conventional ones such as roundabouts and new types such as angled single lane, angled double lane, driveway link, driveway entry, entry divider, road humps and intersection remodel. Thirty four treatments were installed in two stages along ten streets in the area spaced so as to keep vehicle speeds to the 40 km/h speed limit. All types of treatments are effective as regards traffic speed reductions and traffic speeds have decreased significantly in all streets especially Goldsworthy Road. Travel times in all treated streets have increased by over 50 per cent. Traffic flows have decreased by 40 per cent in Goldsworthy Road and 24 per cent in Goulburn Avenue but the changes in other streets have not been so significant. The amount of through traffic using Goldsworthy road and Vermont Avenue has decreased significantly. The majority of residents are in favour of the various types of treatments and favour their retention. Non-resident drivers are in favour of roundabouts and road humps but not of other treatments to the same extent. (Author/TRRL)
