THE PERFORMANCE OF CONCRETE BLOCK PAVEMENTS CONSTRUCTED ON LOW CBR SUBGRADES
This paper describes the performance of full-scale trial sections of interlocking concrete block pavement installed at the Australian Road Research Board in Melbourne. The test sections were designed in accordance with the Australian design guide for concrete block pavements published by the Cement and Concrete Association of Australia (CACA). All sections failed under trafficking, with rut depths in the three thickest sections approaching or exceeding 20 mm after about 3500 esas. The development of surface rutting, recoverable surface deflections and moisture movement in the pavement layers is described. The increase in subgrade moisture content and drop in CBR indicates that the joints of the block surface did not seal under traffic. The characteristics of the bedding sand, sub-base and subgrade layers are also discussed. The performance of the pavements, which were constructed on subgrades of low CBR, suggests that the thickness of granular material specified in the CACA design guide at low cbrs may not be adequate and some possible revisions are suggested. The number of the covering abstract for the conference is TRIS no. 393385. (Author/TRRL)
