THE DESIGN OF PAVEMENTS SURFACED WITH ASPHALT FOR PARTICULAR TEMPERATURE ENVIRONMENTS
Pavement design procedures currently in use in Australia generally rely on limiting surface deflections in pavements surfaced with asphalt. This is done in the hope of reducing tensile strain in the asphalt so as to prevent premature flexural cracking. Asphalt in pavements at low temperatures is generally less strain tolerant than at higher temperatures despite the fact that at lower temperatures the asphalt is stiffer and so develops lower strains under a constant load. The paper describes a procedure for taking into account, at the design stage, the variation in flexural performance of asphalt with temperature for various traffic spectra and asphalt thicknesses. The procedure enables readily available climatic data to be used to calculate a pavement life multiplier that can be input into current design procedures. Pavement life multipliers are defined for a number of centres throughout Australia. The number of the covering abstract for the confelrence is TRIS No. 393385. (TRRL)
