MARGINAL AGGREGATES FOR SEALED ROADS: A NEW ZEALAND EXPERIENCE

New Zealand with its wide variations of climate, topography and geology, generally within very short distances of each other, relies on a variety of unbound granular basecourse pavements with thin surfacing coats to provide the major portion of its sealed roading network. The growing scarcity of some premium aggregates plus economic considerations has resulted in an increasing interest being shown in marginal aggregates. The New Zealand Pavements Committee published a major review of aggregate research in 1980 in which it promoted the use of a "road aggregate selection chart". Research since then has enlarged on the use of this chart and encouragement has been given to depart from the "premium aggregate specification". A case history is presented on how a medium sized rural local authority has used the results of this research and the road aggregate selection chart to develop a road sealing program of up to 20 km per year using marginal aggregates and staged construction techniques.
