AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE USE OF THERMOGRAVIMETRY AND DERIVATIVE THERMOGRAVIMETRY FOR THE ANALYSIS OF BITUMINOUS MATERIALS

Thermogravimetry and derivative thermogravimetry have been used to analyse a number of standard samples of bitumen containing diluents (kerosine, ago (automotive gas oil) ) and adhesion agents. This was to initially evaluate the method for the quantitative determination of these diluents and detection of adhesion agents. This thermal analytical technique was then applied to actual road samples to investigate the durability of the diluents and adhesion agents when used on the road. It was found that: (i) it was possible to volatilise the total amount of diluent at a temperature which did not thermally degrade the bitumen, (II) the adhesion agent additives have a marked effect on the thermal characteristics of bitumen, enabling the agents to be detected, and (III) when the road samples were analysed the adhesion agents were detected in all samples and it was also possible to calculate the diluent content still remaining in the bitumen. The number of the covering abstract for the conference is TRIS No. 393385. (Author/TRRL)
