WATER JETTING ON THE MOTORWAYS

Jets of water containing sand as an abrasive and travelling at speeds faster than sound are being considered as a way of stripping off crumbling concrete at Spaghetti junction in the Midlands and the Taf V Fawr viaduct in Wales. The concrete is cut away from reinforcing bars without damage to the metal. Details are given of the latest jet design. There is relatively little noise and vibration involved with the method, and traffic is not interrupted. (TRRL)
