NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN PRESSUREMETER TESTING
Methods of operation and possible applications of self-boring pressuremeters and high-pressure dilatometers are described. Self-boring pressuremeters can be drilled into the ground with minimal disturbance. The camkometer described has six electrical transducers to monitor radial displacement at three positions around the instrument, total pressure within it and soil pore pressure at two diametrically opposed positions. A new data acquisition, monitoring and analysis system, based on a hp-86 microcomputer, has been developed. Extensive use is made of on-site graphics. The system could be used to measure in situ stress, deformation properties, horizontal coefficient of consolidation and undrained strength in clays and angles of friction in sands. The high pressure dilatometer has been developed for weak rocks and gravels unsuited to the self-boring pressuremeter; transducers record radial displacement at six positions around the instrument using the same data acquisition and monitoring principles. It can be used to determine rock mass moduli and the assessment of rock mass shear strength. (TRRL)
