THE CRUNCHINGMOLE ON TYNESIDE
The authors describe construction of a trial length of the eastern interceptor sewer, Tyneside, through an area covered by soft silty alluvium which lies over a thick layer of loose river sand and gravel containing cobbles and small boulders. These water-bearing strata lie on top of a glacial hill. An Iseki crunchingmole tunnel-boring machine, a full face remote controlled bentonite slurry shield, was used. The machine incorporated an integral stone crusher, avoiding the need for compressed air and supplementary ground treatment. Excavation through the heavily cobbled soil, difficulties encountered and the completion of the operation by limiting the maximum torque of the cutter head to 60 percent of the design rating through a mixed face of clay, sand, gravel and cobbles are described.
